Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a functional combination of hypnosis and therapy.  Hypnosis places you in a relaxed state so that your conscious mind can be calmed and the subconscious can be communicated with directly.

This direct communication allows the therapy to occur without the client over thinking and then possibly creating mental blocks and/or engaging with the therapist rather than the therapeutic treatment.  Any interaction with the therapist is generally uninhibited and during the trance, the therapist may utilise hypnotic and post-hypnotic suggestions to assist with the identified issue after you leave.

What is a ‘hypnotic trance’?  Will I be in control?

A hypnotic trance is a state of relaxation; the depth of the trance and associated relaxation will vary from client to client, and also in response to the instructions provided by the therapist.  Many people experience ‘trance-like’ states.  For example, if you are watching a TV show, or am engrossed in a good book, or just sit around an open fire and relax; if when doing this you lose track of time and feel relaxed and refreshed, then this is what a hypnotic trance is like.

While in a hypnotic trance, you will remain in control.
It is not like you see on the TV show where the person is controlled by the hypnotist.  Hypnotic trances are deliberately triggered for therapeutic purposes, and in this trance state you will be focused and be able to concentrate on achieving your goals.

What is the difference between the conscious and subconscious mind?

If you have ever heard the expression, just sleep on your problems, and you have woken up the next morning with a solution to your problem.  Or have you ever had a problem, and then when distracted doing something else, the solution comes to you.  Then this is your subconscious working.  While you were relaxed, sleeping, or distracted your subconscious mind processed the problem and delivered a solution.

The same approach is undertaken during hypnotherapy.  When a trance is induced your conscious mind is relaxed and your subconscious mind can focus on problem-orientated solutions.
