Brian Basham
Brian Basham is a registered counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist with a career spanning clinical practice, senior education and training, strategic analysis, and doctoral research. He spent nearly a decade as a police officer, and seven years as a Senior Educator with Victoria Police, served as a Bail Justice in Victoria, and holds postgraduate qualifications in counselling, education, and business. He is currently completing a PhD examining the relationship between management behaviour and employee mental health. He is based in Horsham and works with individuals and organisations across the Wimmera region and beyond.

Life has a way of shaping us in unexpected ways. My path to counselling didn’t begin in a textbook — it began on the streets as a Victoria Police officer, adjudicating after-hours bail and child protection applications as a Bail Justice, in hospital after a serious on-duty injury, and in my own quiet reckoning with what it means to carry the weight of difficult experiences and keep moving forward.
That personal journey — alongside nearly a decade training and educating police officers, and years of academic research into how workplaces affect the mental health of the people inside them — has given me something I believe no qualification alone can teach: a deep, first-hand understanding of what it is to face pressure, uncertainty, trauma, and the moments when life simply doesn’t go to plan.
Today, as a registered counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist based in the Grampians Wimmera Mallee region, I bring that lived experience together with doctoral-level academic training to offer a counselling service that is practical, compassionate, and genuinely tailored to you.
